ALERT: Red state abortion funds need your help now, and post-Roe
"Red states will need it most because everyone is going to give to 'receiving states' and that destroys our infrastructure," says Robin Marty, Operations Director of the West Alabama Women's Center.
Abortion is already illegal in Oklahoma and functionally banned in Texas. Virtually every red state either has a trigger law that will ban the procedure the moment Roe is gone or is the process of banning it now.
Samuel Alito’s draft opinion overturning a half-century of “settled law” is a reminder that voting and protesting in overwhelming and historic numbers obviously wasn’t enough to prevent this catastrophe.
So many of us are wondering what to do next that doesn’t involve moving to Canada — where abortion laws are generally more permissive but abortion rates are lower — or numbing ourselves with anything willing to numb us.
The most obvious solution for many is to shoot our respective money hoses at the problem. But where to aim it?
Robin Marty has been on the frontlines of the war for bodily autonomy, preparing for the end of Roe and desperately trying to prepare others. She’s the author of New Handbook For A Post-Roe America and Operations Director of the West Alabama Women's Center.
I asked her how she thinks we should prioritize giving to one of the many worthy abortion funds you can (still) find online.
“Red states will need it most because everyone is going to give to ‘receiving states’ and that destroys our infrastructure,” she said.
Abortion providers throughout red states are even more essential now in what are likely to be the last days of Roe. And their need will only be greater once a constitutional right to an abortion is vaporized.
Clinics like the West Alabama Women’s Center “will be dealing with the fallout of people who can’t leave no matter how much money and resources they get,” Marty said.
All the money going to blue states won’t help those most immiserated by the end of Roe.
So her advice? Pick a red state abortion fund and give what you can.
Repeat: A RED STATE ABORTION FUND.
